From experience I can tell you that all the methods work well, when in doubt refer to the manual, they will have break-in procedures specific to your engine. the only important thing to remember is not to be too harsh on the engine, break it in slowly taking your time. Remember your not racing yet…

The 7 Step Break in Procedure

While most people recommend running about 5 tanks of fuel through the engine I generally like to run 7, I just like to make sure that I get the engine broken-in correctly. If you look at the oil that comes out the exhaust you’ll see that by the 5th or sixth run the tiny bits of metal will be gone from the flow, initially you can see the engine breaking-in from the oil and unburnt fuel.

Needle Settings 

Refer to your manual for the specific settings for your engine. The problem is that because each RC Nitro Engine is different you can’t just copy your buddies settings, you have to work these out. Break in settings must be as rich as possible, this keep the engine cool and the excess fuel and oil will help flush out the tiny metal bits that come off during the break-in.

Fuel Tank #1

I’ll idle the engine for the entire tank, you often need to keep the throttle open about 10% during the first few minutes, at least while the engine warms up. Keep the revs as low as possible, but don’t change the mixture needle settings just yet. Once the tank is complete let the engine cool down for about 5 – 15 minutes. Be sure to leave the piston at dead bottom center while it cools, or else the shrinking sleeve could cause a problem if the piston is also there.

Fuel Tank #2

After the initial idle stage I’ll run the car with as little throttle as possible, but keep the car moving, I make sure when I accelerate (not more than 25%) I’ll do it smoothly and consistently. It’s important to start putting some load on the engine, because when you race your RC Car there will be load on the engine. Try to match your break in conditions to your expected running conditions as closely as possible. The idea is to slowly build up the revs of your engine until your able to hit max speed by the end of the 7 th tank. Run your car in a figure-8, as turning makes the engine work slightly harder. After the 2nd Tank you can start to lean your motor out a little.

Fuel Tank #3 -#5

Now we’re ready to start getting some speed out of your RC Nitro Car. What I do is start to run the car up and down a long straight, with figure-8 patterns at a low idle between them. I will run at max 25% throttle for about a minute, then rev the RC car flat out for at most 2 seconds. then return to a the standard max 25% throttle. Make sure you get your car to rev right through it’s range, but don’t keep it at full throttle for too long.

Fuel Tank #5 – #7

I continue as above, but shortening the periods between the bursts of full throttle. I also start to work out the tune of my car, I only change the air / fuel mixture before the 5th tank if I’m struggling to keep the engine running. After the 5th tank I start to lean the mixture by 1/8th turn. I still like to run it until there are no small metal bits in the exhaust discharge.

Once your done with the above break-in procedure I would still run my RC Car gently for the first couple of times on the track, this will ensure that you get the most life our of your brand new RC Nitro Engine.

Price; Gas boats tend to be more expensive than either their electric or nitro brethren, often times topping $1,000. However, the devil is in the details. The gas is cheaper to purchase than the nitro-methane mixture required in nitro boats. Also, the gas boats will run longer on a tank of gas. So over the long term, the boats may actually turn out to be a less expensive alternative than the nitro models.

Performance; These boats are heavier and have design efficiencies built into them to be able to handle rougher water surfaces. Where lighter nitro boats may not be able to handle wakes without flipping, gas boats will often times slice right through them with ease. Hull designs and stabilizing features make this a boat built for continuous performance at high speeds.

Water Space Requirements; Make no mistake. You must have a larger body of surface water to be able to operate these models efficiently. Ponds, pools and really small water bodies won’t cut it. They simply move too fast! Lakes and in some cases ocean racing are ideal. This rule is particularly true for competitive racing.

Product Availability; Whereas the lower tier toy grade and electric rc boat models have a lot of manufacturers offering plenty of product availability, the higher performing models really are limited to a few manufacturers. They are Megatech, Traxxas and Venom. There are certainly others, but these three deliver the broadest product offerings.

Maintenance; The gas boats, like the nitro counterparts, must be maintained. Their engine parts must be tended to and replaced when necessary. Also, depending on where you operate your gas boats, they may need to be tuned accordingly. Operating on lake surfaces at altitude will require special tuning for peak efficiency, just like a full sized speed boat.

Noise; This is an unfortunate by product of the gas boats. They are loud, which is why often times a larger body of water will help dissipate the noise. They need to be operated within allowable noise ordinances and with a view towards polite sharing of outdoor water bodies.

Skill; Gas boats require a level of skill to handle them. The combination of size and speed can be potent in the wrong hands. Certainly some experience with hobby grade electric models is warranted before stepping at the controls of one of these finely tuned boats. However, once mastered, the experience is unmatched.

A lot of serious rc boat enthusiasts prefer the gas boats to either nitro or electric due to the performance that can be squeezed out of these boats. The fuel is easy to get your hands on and over the long haul will be cheaper to operate. Price is a valid concern and these boats should be considered investments and not one time shots at having fun only to be shelved and never use again.

On the other hand, it only has to be as complicated as you want to make it, and it is easy to simply buy a ready made boat, put it in the water and go. There are many radio controlled boat associations all across the country which offer all sorts of competitions and races for many different engine types and boat classifications and it is easy to find one of these clubs near you and get involved.

When many people first get into the radio controlled boats world they start off with electric powered boats as they tend to be the least expensive option. Whenever you get into a new hobby, it is always a good idea to start out small to see if it is something you want to continue on in a more dedicated fashion. Electric powered RC boats run from $30 or less for the very entry level boats to around $200 for higher end models, and they do not require you to buy and fill them with extra fuel. There is a wide range of manufacturers for electric powered radio controlled boats for any experience level and price range, and if you do a little research and ask around, you can easily find the right boat for you.

Once you get a little farther into the world of RC boat racing, you will find a wide range of options for fuels and boat designs. Beyond electric, there are also gasoline powered and nitro powered boats. All three of these options have their own set of pros and cons, and each is suited for a different type of racer or hobbyist. For the weekend hobbyist, the best option is probably a gas powered boat. Gas, or a gasoline and oil mixture is a cheaper fuel than nitro, and easy to obtain. Gas boats are also some of the most commonly used RC boats, meaning they are easy to find, modify, and add new components to. Gas boats will also give you the longest run times. Nitro methane, also known as nitro, is a higher cost, higher end RC boat fuel, though it does offer significantly better speed and performance than that of electric boats. Many competitors willing to drop some fairly serious money on their hobby and into the straight run competitions prefer this fuel for the high speeds that are achievable. Electric boats may be slower, but they are still the best for the occasional hobbyist or for someone who just wants to have fun with a radio controlled boat from time to time. Speed-wise, electric boats typically run between five and thirty miles an hour, while gas boats run upwards of 65 plus miles per hour and nitro can reach speeds above 100 miles per hour.

When it comes to hull designs, there are quite a lot to choose from. A good starting point for most beginning radio controlled boaters would be the V hull (also known as a mono hull), which as the name might suggest has a hull in the shape of a V for greater slicing through the water, or catamaran, which has two large sponsons that run along the length of the boat and provide floatation and stability. Other types include hydros, aka tunnel hulls, which use specifically placed full length sponsons to create a cushion or tunnel of air that helps increase the speed of the boat and outriggers, which come in 3 point, 4 point and multi point suspension varieties and all have partial boat length sponsons held out to the side of the craft.

When people are just starting out, they may be looking for recommendations on the right model to choose. The primarily gas powered Expresscraft brand comes very highly recommended, although they are not the cheapest. If you are unsure as to how involved you want to get in the world of radio controlled boat racing, a good idea would be to start out with a lower cost electric model easily found at any hobby shop and try it out. If you decide you like it, you might look into the Expresscraft brand, venom group boats and the Arrow Shark boats. Bear in mind that the last two are manufactured overseas and may be more difficult to get your hands on, but they are available on the internet and if you can find them they can make for excellent boats perfect for everyone ranging from people just starting out all the way up to those with years of professional experienced. Your best bet is to look for a gas powered V hull or catamaran with a good reputation. Of course, it never hurts to ask questions, and if you are shopping for your boat in person at a hobby store or other physical establishment, see if you can find someone on the staff who has experience with RC boats and can give you some first hand reviews and recommendations.

Once you get farther into the world of RC boat racing, you can begin to customize many different parts of the craft beyond just their physical form and fuel systems. The key to any successful radio controlled boat is its electronic signal transmission system. The more powerful the signal, the greater the range of your boat. You can modify a boat’s transmitters and receivers, as well as its receiver crystals. You can also customize all the different parts of your boat including its motion servos, propellers, and any other physical design component for greater speed, agility, range and stability. The possibilities are nearly endless, limited only by your budget and your creativity.
